Frequently Asked Questions
What math program do you use?
We use Saxon Math. This is a mastery-based program where students must fix their errors before proceeding on. Students are pre-tested and placed into the correct level for them. It is totally individualized and each student will be on a different lesson.
How often should I expect homework?
Every night! Students need to bring their math book home with them every night. They should not need any help from others. There is plenty of work that is assigned for review and practice. It is not necessary for them to complete their worksheets. If they need help with any problems, they can ask in class the next day.
How are students graded?
Students are given one grade per week. Their weekly grade is based on effort only. Students are required to complete 2 worksheets to 100% accuracy per day. They can always do more, earning extra credit. They should never get lower than a B in math! Students also take tests from time to time. These count the same as weekly grades.
What about tests?
Tests are given from time to time after a student has completed at least 15 lessons. Tests are also masteyr-based, meaning that if they score 80% (B-) or below, they must retake the test after doing review work. Test grades are weighted equal to weekly grades.
Are there any rewards?
YES!! When students work hard Monday-Thursday to complete their assigned work, they are able to earn "Fun Friday". This is an opportunity for students to do a fun math activity of their choice, selected from their list below, and still receive credit as if they had done their Saxon work. In addition to this reward, students also earn rewards through-out the marking period for the amount of assignments completed. The class has some say in what rewards are offered.
