Frequently Asked Questions:
What language arts program do you use? We use the Language! Program - Students need to be in class to get the most out of this direct instruction program. Most work is done during class time.
When do we go to the library?
We go on FRIDAYS for about 10 minutes. PLEASE make sure all fines are paid so your child can check out books. This is where they get books to read for AR, which is a major part of their grade.
What is AR?
Accelerated Reader (AR)- In order to take responsibility for their own learning, students are required to read Accelerated Reader books from the library ON THEIR OWN TIME. After they finish the book, they will have opportunity to test on it and earn points. Students must get 10 points by the end of the marking period. This will count as a major grade! Your child needs to ALWAYS have a book to read in every class.
How can I best help my child?
You can help by making sure library fines are always paid and by reading with your child each night.
Do we have homework in English class?
I require that each child reads AT HOME for at least 10 minutes every night. Besides for reading, I assign very little other homework. As such, Accelerated Reader (AR) is a large part of your child's grade.
When and where can students take AR tests?
Students can test in my classroom, in your homeroom class, or in the library. Students who get to class early and can usually test in my room before class begins. If students are unable to come early but let me know that they are ready to test, I will attempt to find a time during class when they can do so. Students can also ask for a library pass so that they can go to the library during lunch to test.
